The challenge of dividing an asset fairly, from cakes to more important properties, is of great practical importance in many situations. While cake cutting may seem like a trivial thing to do, this topic has spurred a lot of research over the last fifty years and has surprisingly rich theory. This topic studies a notion of fairness suitable for mathematical study and determines various methods that attempt to maximize this notion.
